ANGLING SEASON

Prospects for the Holidays FISH REPORTED PLENTIFUL The fishing prospects for the holiday season in the Rotorua district are particularly good owing to the favourable season being experienced. The hot weather of the past fortnight has brought large numbers of fish from the deeper waters of the lakes. The run of fish which has taken place recently is from six weeks to two months earlier than usual, and the present excellent conditions will be sustained unless colder weather sets in, as this would send the fish into deeper waters. The fish now being taken are in good condition and average 3jlb. The weight is often up to 51b. or 61b. They are being taken on the fly, and good catches are to be had in the shallow waters on the edge of Lake Rotorua. Three excellent spots are the Waitete Stream, Amohau and Hamurana. Some very fine catches have been made at these places during the past few days, there being no difficulty in securing limit bags in a short time. Other good grounds are at Lakes Rotoiti, Okatina and Waikaremoana. At Taupo good sport is being obtained at JeJheoe, Motutare and Moteiopa Points, and also at the Delta. The Waikato River is fishing well, especially at Atiainuri, where a party of three took a bag of 60 fish. Streams in the Bay of Plenty are also providing good sport. It is generally considered that this is one of the best seasous experienced in the district for several years. lu his fortnightly fishing report for the Rotorua district, Mr. A. Kean, conservator, states that in the Rotorua district reports of the fishing in the various lakes in the Rotorua area for the period ended December 15 gave

definite indication that fishing wm good during the last ten days. Anglers oil Lake Rotorua were having wonderfully good fishing during the last day ot the report, and limit bags were frequently taken. The average weight of fish taken from Laka Rotorua seemed to be a definite improvement on that of previous years, being not less than 31b. Fish weighing irom 41b. to 51b. were frequently caught. In the Whakatane-Opotiki area fish were reported to be in good condition. The best fishing in the Whakatane and Waimana Streams appeared to have been had in the evenings between 7 aud 9 o’clock. The Huka Pool outlet in the Waikato River fished very well with dry fly. At this locality anglers, over a period of several clays, averaged five fish each an evening. The average weight ot the fish was not less than 3!b. There was not a great number of anglers in the Taupo area during the period, but good reports had been obtained. Fish were observed to be collecting at the outlets of all rivers. Fishing conditions in the Tokaanu area during the period were not very good. A glare on the rivers made it difficult for most anglers, and there was little or practically no wind. All the streams were very low, and rain was badly needed. Trolling was very good, and some excellent catches of fish up to 91b. were taken. About 70 per cent, of the fish taken were in splendid condition.
