SUPPLEMENTARY ESTIMATES.

DEFENCE EXPENDITURE £57,703 By Telegraph—Press Association. WELLINGTON Dec. 20. In the supplementary Estimates, introduced in the House of Representatives to-night, an item of £438 is included as payment to the International Relief Union, an institution which assists members of countries affected by disaster such as earthquakes, cyclones, etc.

The secretary of the Treasury (Mr A. D. Park) receives an increase of salary of £2OO per annum. The cost of paying members of tho Tariff Commission is set down at £l5OO, including an additional allowance of £270 to Dr. Craig as chairman.

A grant of £l5O is made to tho Public Service Commissioner (Mr P. D. N. Verschaffelt) to cover the cost of his visit to Samoa.

Sir Thomas Wilford is granted £5OO to cover the cost of his return to New Zealand, and the new High Commissioner (Sir James Parr) is granted a similar amount to cover tho cost of his proceeding to England. A compassionate grant of £6OO is made to the widow of the late Mr H. E. Holland, and £250 is provided for the expenses of Mr Holland’s funeral. An amount of £5OO is provided for the expenses of by-elections. The Defence estimates reveal an expenditure of £54,703. An item of £5OOO is provided for expenses incidental to aircraft landing-grounds. A vote of £3OOO is proposed for additions to Parliament Buildings. Payment of rentals of properties leased from owners under the smallfarms plan accounts for £l5OOO. The director of the horticulture division of the Department of Agriculture is voted £475 towards the expenses of his visit to the United States. The vote of the Department! of Agriculture includes tho following items: Guarantee and bonus on export of fruit (additional), £6000; carriage of limo for bona fide farmers (additional), £5000; subsidy to manufacturers of superphosphate (additional), £20,000. A vote of £6OOO is provided fr> r the purchase and working of B-class broadcasting stations, but part of this is recoverable.

A compassionate allowance of £748 is made to the widow of the late Judge W. E. Rawson, Native Trustee. Items of expenditure for which there was no authority in last year’s Estimates are set out in the unauthorised expenditure account, which totals £159,558. The following jtems are included: Expenses in connection with the exchange of Australian silver coin for English mintage, £1772. Visit of Mr W. Downie Stewart and Mr A. D. Park, Secretary to the Treasury, to London last year, £2956.
