U.S. LYNCHING CONTROVERSY
Use of Troops on People Deplored VETERANS’ EVICTION RECALLED. SAN FRANCISCO, November 30. Mr Herbert Hoover entered the Brooke Hart lynching controversy with a sharp indirect exchange between himself and Governor Rolph. Yesterday the former President signed a joint statement with a number of educationalists and civic leaders at his home at Paloalto condemning Governor Rolph’s stand. To-day the Governor said: “I deplore the use of troops against our people. Look at tho mess we got into when troops were called out in Washington against the bonus marchers.” This has reference to Mr Hoover's eviction of the war veterans in the summer of 1932 and drew a sharp counter statement from Mr Hoover accusing Governor Rolph of “gross ignorance of facts” and pointing out that none was shot or otherwise injured. The calling of troops to Washington was done to prevent further bloodshed.
