SOUTH AFRICAN STRIKE
Failure of Conference MEN REFUSE TO RETURN (Received 2, 10.45 a.m.) JOHANNESBURG, Dec. ]. All attempts to settle the strike m the new State areas mine have failed. A conference between the Chamber of Mines and the Mine Workers’ Union proved abortive. The situation is now likely to become unpleasant since the mine management has informed the strikers that they will be dismissed unless they return to work. Only five men have thus far resumed. The others are collecting funds to continue the strike.
