WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

ESKDALE GROUP MEETS THIRD BIRTHDAY CELEBRATED This month’s meeting of the Eskdale Women’s Institute took the form of a garden party at Erance House, the occasion being the third birthday of the institute. Miss Kirkham (president) cordially welcomed visitors from Te Poliue-Ohurakura, Bay View, Tangoio and Kaiwaka. In all there were over 70 present. After singing the Institute Song, only necessary business was dealt with. Letters from absent members were read and an invitation from the Napier Townswomen’s Guild to attend its gardening circle meeting on November 9. This invitation was much appreciated. Another new member was welcomed, A short programme of items was held as follows:—Pianoforte solo, Miss D. Kirkham; a playette, “Dotty’s Marriage,” Mrs Scott and Miss A. Elorance; folk-dancing, Mesdames Bryson and King and the Misses Wilson (2), Campbell, Blair, Florence and Martel; sailor’s hornpipe, Miss Campbell. Before tea a treasure hunt amongst the beautiful grounds gave everyone an opportunity of admiring the gardens, especially the wonderful roses. The treasure was found by Mrs Ashley, of Westshore. A special attraction on the tea table was the grand birthday cake, made by Mrs Tait and iced by Mrs F. Wilson. Much praise was accorded both ladies and Mrs Tait was asked to cut the cake. Before leaving the presidents of the visiting institutes (Mrs Osborne, Mrs Zeigler, Mrs Turnbull, and Miss Nicholls, vice-president) thanked Eskdale for tlie afternoon’s pleasure and wished the institute many happy returns. Miss Kirkham suitably responded and proposed a hearty vote of thanks to Mr and Mrs Phillips and staff for the opportunity given them all in spending their birthday in such ideal surroundings. After three ringing cheers, “For They Are Jolly Good Fellows” was sung. Miss Kirkham then handed Mrs Osborne (Northern Hawke’s Bay Federation secretary and group convenor) a bag of sweets to distribute among tho boys of France House from the Eskdale Institute. A generous supply of cakes and sandwiches was also left •for their tea. The singing of the National Anthem brought a very happy afternoon to a close.
