MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS

BRITISH LABOUR GAINS. CONSERVATIVES LOSE SEATS. LONDON, November 2. The final results of the municipal elections show that Labour gained many seats, mainly at the expense of Conservatives. Taking the 346 councils in England ns a whole, Labour secured a net gain of 176 seats, while the loss to Concervatives was 106. Labour, however, controls only 25 boroughs, 13 of which were captured at this election. Thus, whereas the Labour leaders are delighted with the success of their candidates there is disappointment at the net result. The "Evening News’’ says: "The niggardly and unimaginative slum clearance projects may account for Labour’s municipal gains, but it is pure speculation to look beyond the political swings of the pendulum. The elections reveal that a strong, stable, benevolent dictatorship is the only way to get efficient government.’’
