GOLF FINAL

AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP WRIGHT WINS, 13 UP, OPEN PLAY-OFF ABANDONED By Telegraph—Press Association AUCKLAND, Oct. 14. After having had seven days of bright, sunshiny weather it was a big disappointment to the Titirangi Coir Club and officials of the New Zealand Golf Council to have a wet day on Saturday for the playing of the final of the amateur championship and the play-off of the tie in the open championship. The former title was won very easily by V. B. Wright, of the Otago Club, who defeated H. A. Black (Miramar). 13 up, while the open championship match was abandoned at tho sixth green in the afternoon, when E. J. Moss and E. S. Douglas were all square. All the greens were then soaking wet, and after consultation with the umpire it was decided to abandon play and re-play over thirtysix holes on Monday. By the time the first round of the amateur contest started at 10 o’clock there was a large number of people present, and almost all of them followed the play. A light drizzle commenced when the players had reached the fifth green and heavy showers fell almost continuously as the play progressed from the eleventh hole onwards. Several of the spectators returned to the club-house well soaked, but a big majority of them followed the play right to the 18th. Tho attendance had swelled very considerably when the players set off on their afternoon round at 1.30. The fact that nothing but a miracle could enable Black to retrieve his position did not deter the hundreds from watching intensely every stroke played Many of them had travelled long distances to see the match, and they did not wish to miss anything. Black wa s quite unable to hold Wright, who continued to play splendidly, with the result that the Otago man became champion at the 25th. The amateur championship match had finished in front of the clubhouse before Moss and Douglas drove off at 2.30. The weather- conditions hud not improved, but this did not deter a verylarge percentage of those present from following the play. However, heavier rain fell and the match was abandoned until Monday. Wright played almost flawless golf up to the greens, but on several occasions he took three putts. His irons were a feature, being hit with splendid precision straight for the pin. Black’s bad start appeared to unsettle his whole game, and at no stage during tho match did he impress. In view of his poor showing it seemed almost a pity that on the previous day he had deprived Young, the promising Titirangi youth, of the chance of participating in the final. Tho big strain of the two rounds in tho semifinal may perhaps have accounted in some measure for Black’s lapse of form on Saturday.

N.Z. LADIES’ CHAMPIONBHIP FOURSOMES TITLE DECIDED (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WANGANUI, Oct. 14. At the women's golf championships in the foursome competition the excellent putting of Miss BarnesGraham and the consistently good long game of Mrs Guy Williams resulted in the pair returning the really good card of 82 to win the championship foursomes, in which they were two strokes better than any of the other competitors and six ahead of the holders, Miss Kay and Miss Gaisford. Tho winners were out in 39, one over bogey, and came home in 43, rain commencing to fall when they reached the 14th and continuing for the remainder of the journey. The last two holes were played in a downpour. This is the second occasion on which Mrs Williams has had tho honour of sharing the championship honours, for she was partnered with Miss S. Watson when she won at Heretaunga in 1930. The title-holders were unaccountably right off their game on the outward journey, taking 45. The seventh, eighth and ninth saw sixes recorded, with a four at the short tenth and six at the French Pass. Tho homeward journey took at least three strokes more than would be considered necessary. ResultsMrs Williams and Miss BarnesGraham, 82; Miss M. James and Miss Hornabrook, 84; Miss Cook and Mrs Butler, 84; Miss Dyer and Miss Ward, 86; Mrs Stout and Mrs Orbell, 86. Miss Kay and Miss Gaisford, the holders, were tenth with 88.
