BASKETBALL

HASTINGS ASSOCIATION CHAMPIONSHIPS NEXT WEEK RESULT OF POPULAR CLUB CONTEST. (By “Step-fast.”) Basketball will be at its height next week when teams representing almost every province In the Dominion will be taking part in the New Zealand championships at Gisborne. The Hawke’s Bay team leaves Napier at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, and will hava their first game on Thursday. From all accounts, the team are fit, but did not give a very favourable impression on Saturday against a team representing -lie remainder of Hustings, but thia would be probably accountable for by some of the players having had a fairly strenuous game prior to the rep. practice. Owing to one of the original centres of the Hawke’s Bay team, M. Smales, having injured her ankle, the selectors have substituted G. Hannah from Hastings. No Team for Napier To-day. In connection with the function for relief of distress in Napier, it was hoped to have the Hawke’s Bay team play at McLean Park this afternoon, but owing to the Hastings members of the team having to play in their competition matches, it was found impossible to arrange anything. The Hastings competitions arc to finish early because of the Hawke’s Bay championships, and one day’s matches cut out would have made it very difficult for the association to arrange matches in time to give up the courts on September 15. It is certainly very regrettable that the Hawke's Bay teain cou.d not be seen in Napier, but it just could not be arranged. Rep. Teama

The team to represent Hawke's Bay ! s as follows:—Forwards: M. Wellwood, G. Symes, E. White, M. O’Keefe. Centres: N. Strandbeck, E. O’Connor, B. Goddard, C. Hannah. Defence: M. Little (captain), M. Diamond (vice-cap-tain), A. Bryan, N. Clarke. The Wellington team will be rs follows: —M. Line (captain), G. McGurk, N. Bell, E. McGuire, M. Houpll, B. Olphert, J. Hurran, M. Clarke, C. Tunner, M. Blake, J. Mitchell, and E. Parsons.

Auckland will be represented by Q. Stuart, G. Gardner, D. Crouc’-, A. Noakes, N. Jacombs, N. Skeen, I. Cliffe, M. Deighton, J. Harper, M. Matangi, P. Norris, and M, Shaw.

Those who have followed up the rep. teams will no doubt recognise player* having played in previous tournaments. Of the Hawke’s Bay team, M. Wellwood, G. Symes, N. Strandbeck and M. Diamond were in the 1930 team, and of last year’s team we have A. Bryan, C. Hannah, G. Symes and N. Strandbeck in again this year. Mrs Fisk will accompany the team again as chaperone, manager and coach, and we wish the team every success in their games during the tournament.

Woodford House and lona Meet Again. The final match between these two colleges for a very coveted cup for competition each year was one of the most exciting matches every played at the college. The day was one that seemed almost set aside for such a match, and all sides of the court were lined with excited students of both colleges, awaiting the verdict. It was really great game—full of excitement from start to finish. The two teams marched on to the field with determination of winning. lona scored the first goal, but Woodford, however, quickly followed suit, and at half-time were five goals in the lead from lona. In the first half lona seemed to have lost all combination, and throw the ball wildly, as it repeatedly went into the hands of their opponents. Woodford girls were playing a good, solid, combined game, the forwards’ passing being particularly good. It was pretty play, followed up by a well-earned goal. At half-time it seemed impossible for lona to pick up. However, there wa» a vast improvement in the second half, and they scored goal after goal without any addition being made to to Woodford's seorc. Woodford’s play was still good, but lona were playing a little better. Woodford did not score as many goals as they might have, and on the call of time lona evened up, making the score 14 all. It is interesting to note that in the first match this season for the cup, Woodford won with a score of 14-11, and in the second lona won with the same score, 14-11, so it was a very fitting thing for the final match to result in a draw, 14-14. Both teams have improved wonderfully, and some of their players are quite up to rep. standard. The colleges are to he congratulated on the good standard of play which has been worked up during the season. Popular Club Contest. The final result of the voting for the most popular club was: —Havelock 111<I, 11.5.0. G. 720, Otano 642, High 8-hool 537, Swifts 249, West End 240, C.O.G. 156, Beatalls 48, Convent 0, Diamond R 0, Rangers 0, St. Matthew’s 0, Westen 0. When it is realised that every vote means a penny, the clubs at the top of the poll have done exceptionally well, Havelock's total being £4 12s 6d, with 11.5.0. G. fl Thanks to the efforts of the clubs who entered the contest whole- ' heartedly, the association should be , -able to pay its share of the expenses of the Hawke's Bay team 1 without any trouble.
