RANFURLY SHIELD MATCH

LARGE CROWDS IN CHRISTCHURCH. SPECIAL TRAINS FROM SOUTH. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 19. All previous football attendances threaten to be passed by to-day’s crowd for the Canterbury-Southland Shield match. The advance guard of visitors from various country districts arrived last night, and these were swelled to many thousands long before 10 o’clock this morning, when three special trains arrived from Dunedin and Invercargill, followed by other specials at intervals )>acl rd to the doors. In addition, streams of cars converged on Christchurch from the early hours, some from as far field as Southland, Blenheim and Nelson. The ferry boat also brought an unusually large number. The streets before noon, when the trek to the ground began, were more crowded than in Grand National week, and real test match atmosphere prevailed. The weather is gloriously fine, almost like midsummer, and the ground is in splendid condition for fast play.
