GERMAN SHIPPING ORDER
BRITISH REPRESENTATIONS. CONFERENCE HELD. (British Official Wireless.) (Received 19, 12.30 p.m.) RUGBY, Aug. 18. Mr Newton nrn e representations yesterday to the < . ial in charge of the economic section or the Reich Ministry for Foreign Affairs regarding the operation of the recent order under the German exchange control regulations. Mr Newton was assured that the regulations were not intended to discriminate against foreign shipping by diverting passenger traffic. It was definitely stated that no order restricting export of goods to German ships was contemplated. A conference took place at the Reich Ministry of Economics between German officials and representatives of foreign shipping companies in Germany with respect to'the recent order which had led the companies to fear that discrimination would be practised in favour of German passenger steamship lines. The conference was of a harmonious character and at the close the representatives of British shipping lines expressed satisfaction with the arrangement devised to meet the criticisms. Berlin Press reports state that the effect of the arrangement will be to remove the restrictions on foreign shipping companies’ activities. An official announcement will be made later. The General Council of the Trades Union Congress will recommend at the annual meeting on September 4 to adopt a boycott of German goods and services in the hope of convincing the German Government that its crimes will not be condoned.
