WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

MAR A ETOT A R A-W AI MA R A M A. The August meeting took place at Miss Barker’s home, Waimarama, Miss Chambers presiding over an attendance of 29 members and visitors. The roll call “What 1 have noticed about hird life during the year,” proved very interesting. Mrs Kiggir gave a very full report of the Dominion Conference held in Christchurch, which was heard with great interest. Mrs G. R. Field proposed a hearty vote of thanks. Arrangements were made for the birthday meeting next month. A letter was received from Mrs Lowry asking if the members would be willing to enter in the proposed floral decorating competition at the forthcoming A and P. Spring Show. This was discussed. Four new members joined at this meeting. Two proposals were made during the meeting, both being carried. Firstly that each member knit a six-inch square on No. 10 needles in plain knitting in New Zealand wool, the same to be made up into a patchwork quilt and raffled at the bazaar; secondly that members practice a song at each meeting, the first to be “Old Folks at Home.” Miss Mary Palmer, assisted by her sister Patricia, gave a most able demonstration of Italian embroidery; unfortunately the time was all too short. Mrs Mason and Miss Ward were hostesses for the afternoon which closed with the singing of the National Anthem. PLKEHOU GROUP. The Pukehou branch of the Women's Institute met on Thursday at the residence of Mrs Gray, there being a record attendance of members. A most interesting and enjoyable time was spent. As usual the meeting was opened by the singing of our Institute song, followed by the ordinary business. Mrs Campbell, in her usual happy style, welcomed three visitors. Mrs Campbell, who was our delegate to the conference held in Christchurch, delighted tho members with her report of the proceedings, which was listened to rapt attention, and all felt that at least some of the enthusiasm which the delegates derived from the conference was passed on to those who had not the privilege of being present. The delegate was thanked by acclamation. Miss Alpin, of Te Hauke, gave one of her interesting demonstrations, the making of a variety of paper flowers, also baskets, in which every member took a keen interest The next meeting is to be a “flower show,” a committee being appointed to arrange for same The competition for the afternoon was “Passi partout’’ picture framing, Mrs Donald carrying off first prize, and Miss Jenkins second. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdamds Cooper, G. Warren and Ryder. A vote of thanks to the demonstrator and the singing of the National Anthem brought another enjoyable afternoon to a close. MEETING AT TAKAPAU. The monthly meeting of the Takapau Women’s Institute was held on Thursday afternoon in the Public Hall supper room, the president (Mrs W. Jackson) presiding over a good attendance of members. Proceedings for the afternoon were opened by the singing of the Institute song, after which the routine business of the branch was attended to. Several apologies for non-attendance were received and new members were nominated for election. Mrs Jackson, as delegate to the recently held Dominion conference at Christchurch, gave a very interesting resume of the work of the conference and a comprehensive report on tho proceedings. Miss Wareham rendered much appreciated pianoforte selections. An item of the afternoon’s programme was a seidling and plant exchange between members. An interesting competition, “some thing new from something old,” was won by Mrs Hewison, with Mrs Jack son second and third Tho competition was responsible for producing a wonderful assortment of the new from the old. The judges for the competition were Mesdames Stevens and Mullin. A special feature of the afternoon was in honour of Miss W. Thompson, who, in view of her early marriage was the recipient of a fine array o* gifts for household use from her co members. Miss Thompson, in a happv speech, thanked tho donors for the many handsome and useful gifts she had received. The hostesses were Mesdames Davis Drake, Douglas and Miss Bayliss. The singing of the National Anthem concluded a meeting of the institute that provided a specially enjoyable time for those present. TIKOKINO GROUP. The monthly meeting of the Tiko kino Women’s Institute was held in the Memorial Hall, Mrs Eddy presiding over a splendid attendance of members. Mrs Brassington. delegate to the Do minion conference in Christchurch gave a most interesting report of tin business and also the social side of th< conference.
