REP. RUGBY

HAWKE’S BAY DEFEATED TWENTY-ONE TO SEVENTEEN WANGaN LT’S SECOND-SPELL BURST WANGANUI, Aug. 16. Wanganui defeated Hawke’s Bay today by 21 points to 17 in a bright display of Rugby. Ip to hall-time it looked as though the visitors would definitely outclass the home fifteen, but nobody was prepared lor tho change that came over tho Wanganui forwards in the second spell. Crushing the visiting forwards they enabled Wanganui to play their backs into action with some purpose, and from then on the game was a triumph for Jack Morgan, Brogden, Bullock-Douglas and Chase. Ihe improvement gained and the zeal of the forwards inspired the team as a whole, and victory by perhaps a little greater margin was really deserved. Hawke’s Bay fielded a team that was said to bo as good as the Bay has turned out for live years. In the forwards Henderson was probably the outstanding man, with Steere, the All Black as good as ever. Ireland also played well. In tbe backs the pick was Williams. This player will be prominent in New Zealand Rugby this year. Grant, at centre, was also a nice player, but the greatest honours of the day were earned by the fullback, Vartan All the Wanganui forwards played well, the outstanding members of the pack being Mclntyre, Fowler, Waters and Lockett Saying that does not in any way detract from the play of the others' It the packs of the future plav as well as the pack of to-day, Wanganui will win matches instead ol losing them. Morgan was the star back on the field Brogden came into his own in the second spell. BullockDouglas scored his inevitable try two of them, in fact. Chase gave the impression that lie is worthy of representative honours. Tries tor Hawke’s Bay were scored by Grant, Ireland and Smith Grant aiid Bradley converted a try each. Vartan potted a goal For Wanganui, Lockett. Bullock-Douglas(2) and Brogden scored tries. Morgan converted three and kicked a penalty goal. Mr E. McKenzie, the North Island selector, was present. SHIELD SEEKERS WIN SOUTHLAND DEFEATS SOUTH CANTERBURY TIMARU. Aug. 16. En route to Christchurch to play Canterbury for the Ranfurly Shield, the Southland" representatives broke their journey at Timaru and to-day defeated South'Canterbury by 24 points to 11. The big Southland forwards shone in short passing, while the tackling of the side was a feature of the match. Southland saw more of the ball in the lineouts and serums, and were very strong in loose rushes and very difficult to stop. The visiting back lino was minus four players who are expected to participate in the shield match, and was not so impressive as was expected. Tries were scored for the visitors by Bruce (2), Frampton, Mitchell, Purdue and Southern, Porter converting two and Sharp one. Adkins secured three tries for South Canterbury, Duka converting one. VICTORY BY ONE POINT TARANAKI BEATS WAIKATO ELTHAM, Aug. 16. Perfect conditions prevailed for the Taranaki versus Waikato match at Eltham, the former winning by the narrow margin of one point. For Taranaki Sullivan (2). Edwards (2), aud S. Fookes scored tries, All Black Collins converting two. Aitken (2) and Carrol scored tries for Waikato, W. Cameron converting all three and kicking a penalty goal. Both teams played good, open football, with bright snappy passing. Waikato were particularly smart in developing attacking movements and were lucky to meet weak tackling. Taranaki started tamely, improving as the game advanced. The half-time scores were: Taranaki" 10, Waikato 8. In the second spell scores came fast, Taranaki scoring three unconverted tries and Waikato two converted ones. The final scores were: Taranaki 19, Waikato 18. WIN FOB MARLBOROUGH ASHBURTON EASILY DEFEATED ASHBURTON, Aug. 16. Marlborough defeated Ashburton by 20 points to six in a fairly fast, open game, the teams being well matched in the first spell, but the visitors’ backs were superior in the second. The score at half-time was B—6. For Marlborough a try was scored by Oldham and converted by Lane, who also kicked a penalty. For Ashburton tries were scored by Bradford and Davison. ‘The Ashburton forwards played pluekil/ in tho second half, being unfortunate in not scoring once or twice. The visitors’ backs improved in passing and the local men were unequal to the demand. The visitors’ score increased by tries by H. Phillips (2), Lane and a penalty by McDonald.
