TE AUTE CONCERT

MAORI ENTERTAINMENT.

DISPLAY OF NATIVE ARTS.

The Maori concert presented by the Te Aute Maori College and held in the Assembly Hail last evening in aid of the unemployed was a wonderful success. Mr C. C. Adams, who leaves for Australia next week, is to be complimented on his foresight in arranging the entertainment and for the able manner in which the concert was conducted.

The programme consisted of Maori glees, hakas, pois and solo items of various sorts and there was not an item that failed to please the audience. The opening item was a men’s haka by the Huia troupe, winners of the Tamatea haka competition at Omahu recently, and this number put the audience on good terms at the outset. A vocal quartet by tho Ruru boys revealed beautiful harmony and the voices blended exquisitely. They sang “Annie Laurie” and were encored. A novel item was the haka by the Runanga ladies, winners of the recent Tamatea competitions. With instrumental accompaniment, Mr D. Kamau showed to distinct advantage in his vocal number “After To-night,” and the poi dancing by the Huia girls was most interesting. Another popular item was that by the Huia. men and this was followed by a pleasing vocal duet by Messrs D. Kamau and Otane, “Was That a Human Thing to Do,” which was loudly encored. Variety was further demonstrated in the action song in Maori “Tune in to Happiness,” by the combined Maori troupe, which received thunderous applause. Versatility was shown by the vocal quintet, “Five Feet Two,” and step dance by the same quintet. After a haka by the Te Aute boys “The King” was sung by all the Maori performers combined.
