EMPIRE DAY

MR. COATES’S MESSAGE A NOTE OF ENCOURAGEMENT. OUTLOOK MOKE REASSURING. WELLINGTON, May - 3 - The Rt. Hon. J G. Coates has issued the iollowing Empire Day message:— “Twelve months ago ttie hopes ot British citizens were mainly centred on the Imperial Economic Conference, which met at Ottawa, and upon the Disarmament Conference then sitting at Geneva since February, 1932, but which had not yet concluded its deliberations. The former marked a definite advance in stimulating the industrial and commercial prosperity of the British Common a ealth. In respect of the latter, though it so far has proved unsuccessful in achieving general agreement on the vital problems of international disarmament the outlook in the light of recent events is distinctly more promising.

“On this anniversary ' Empire Day the hopes of the nation are focussed upon the World Monetary and Economic Conference which meets in London next month and at which New Zealand will be represented by the Prime Minister and Minister of Industries and Commerce. On the decisions of'this conference will largely depend the return of international confidence and prosperity and the diminution of unemployment which has so sorely oppressed all countries. “The times through which we havb been passing ®re hard and strenuous and have fully tested the courage and staying powers of our people. Conditions, X fear, will for some time to come continue to be difficult, but I have no hesitation in saying that, compared with last year, the outlook is undoubtedly more reassuring and that we have now reached rock-bottom. “The alleviation of these depressing conditions can in my opinion be definitely helped and fostered by doing everything possible to promote the unity of the Empire and co-operation among all its peoples.’’ KARL JELLICOE S MESSAGE THE BONDS OF EMPIRE AUCKLAND, Tuesday. Earl Jellicoe, president of the Empire Day Movement, has sent the following Empire Day message to the GovernorGeneral with a request for its transmission to the people of New Zealand:— “In sending my hearty greetings and best wishes as president of the Empire Day Movement to every part of His Majesty’s Dominions, 1 wish to express my admiration of the magnificent spirit which has dominated the whole Empire during the very difficult year through which we have passed—a year in which the industrial depression has caused much suffering and sorrow to all classes. “It is a happy thought that the great conference at Ottawa last year drew still closer the ties which bind the Empire together in a bond of mutual co-operation for the benefit of all. The true Empire spirit which inspired the representatives at Ottawa from all the Dominions sounded a very welcome note of hope for the future industrial prosperity of the Empire. Should we not, then, unite in firm determination when celebrating Empire Day to support Empire unity both in the spirit and in the deed? Remember the watchwords of our movement: ‘Duty, responsibility, sympathy and self-sacrifice for the Empire.’ ”
