MAORI HOCKEY TOURNEY

YESTERDAY’S PLAY. GAMES AT OMAHU. Many close and interesting games took place yesterday in the first stages of the Maori hockey and football tourney now taking place at Omaliu Pa. The matches were in many instances intensely exciting, and several times showed first-rate form and combination. The tourney is continuing this afternoon and to-morrow, and will conclude with competitions in singiug, poi, and hakas at the pa to-morrow evening. A feature of yesterday’s matches was the efficiency of tho organisation, and much credit in this connection is due to the officials of the Tamatea Hoekcy Sub-Assoeiation, under whoso auspices the tournament is being held.
