INCIDENT OF BIG FIRE
DANCERS GIVE AID. SLEEPING FAMILY ROUSED. CHRISTCHURCH, April 20. Mr and kjrs F. A. Salter, whose house was burned yesterday, when Messrs Hardie and Thomson’s tinibci mill was destroyed, state that they owo a debt of gratitude to a party of young people. When the flro was sweeping through the timber yard it caught the house. The young people, who were on their way home from a dance, rushed in and aroused the household. They snatched a little boy, who was asleep on a back porch, from his bed just iu time, and then worked strenuously in r.n endeavour to save the family’s belongings, in spite of the fact that they were all dressed for dancing. At another house, which was gutted, there was an amusing incident. Two late revellers, very inebriated, gave timely assistance while other helpers were busy elsewhere. The owner said afterwards: “Two men came along as tight as owls, but, by Jove, didn’t they shift that fu'niture.”
