Cameron’s orchestra supported excellent music and a sumptuous supper was provided. Shortly before 1 o’clock this morning fire totally destroyed a live-roomed house near the Black Bridge at Haumoaua. The premises were owned by Mr C. Jensen and were occupied by Mr and Mrs C. Blythe and family. The outbreak spread with surprising rapidity, and the occupants were unable to save anything. The cause of the outbreak 'and particulars regarding insurances are not known at present. An indication of the vigorous neasuies being carried out by the Aucklanu Acclimatisation Society to exterminate hawks, stoats and weasels is given in the annual report of the Bj. ciety. The sum of £378 was spent by the society last year in bounties for the destruction of 14,951 hawks. Over the past 11 years, 144 972 pairs of hawks’ feet have been sent to tho society, £3897 being paid in rewards. During the past year 5219 tails of stoats and weasels were sent to the society, royalties paid on a basis of 1/- a tail amounting to £394. Easter traffic at the Hastings railway station was very heavy this year, and the returns show a decided all-round increase compared with the holiday period twelve months ago, despite the fact that the vacation was three weeks later in the season this year. The total number of tickets sold was 802 this year, and last year 600, the roveI nue being £664 17s 7d and £469 2s Id : respectively, an increase in revenue of £195 15s 7d. party of three deer-stalkers from Hawke’s Bay on Mahia Peninsula during the Easter holidays. -The best was a 17-pointer and the remaining two 16pointers, all being good specimens. The party reported that although deer were plentiful, there was a scarcity of firstclass heads, and this would be more marked as time went on owing to the fact that there was evidence of inbreeding. With three rifles a large bag of deer could have been obtained, but the stalkers were content with bringing down only the best specimens.—P.B. ‘ ‘ Herald. ’ ’ This season Gisborne has exported approximately 8600 cases of , fruit, almost entirely apples, with a few pears. The remainder of tho season should ; produce a further >3OOO cases of apples to bring the season's total exports up to 12,000 cases, or only about half last year’s tally. Tho latest shipment to leave Gisl orne was last Thursday, when 805 cases of apples were loaded for the United Kingdom and 4.7 cases for the Continent.
