TRANSPORT LICENSING

No. 4 DISTRICT AUTHORITY. OBJECTION TO A LICENSE. Objections to a license being granted to Mr W. J. Calderwood, the owner of a ’bus service between Napier and Korokipo, was made by Mr. F. Patten, on behalf of the Hawke’s Bay Motor Company, at the meeting of the No. 4 District Transport Licensing Authority held in Napier. Mr Patten’s objection concerned part of Calderwood’s route only, being that portion between Avenue road and the Taradale Camping ground. The grounds for the objection were that that area was already well served by the ’bus services run by Mr Watson, Mr Robinson and by the Hawke’s Bay Motor Company. On behalf of Calderwood, Mr C. W. Nash pointed out to the Transport Authority that if the Hawke’s Bay Motor Company desired to raise anobjeetion, tho onus was upon the company to give proof that Calderwood’s service along that part of the route was unnecessary. Mr Nash then called upon Calderwood to give evidence, tne latter stating that he considered that his service between Avenue road and the camping ground saved members of the public who lived in that area half an hour’s walk to the nearest ’bus route. Questioned by Mr Patten, Caiaerwood said that his average number of passengers for that portion of his route was three or four, while his maximum number for one trip would be about six. Questioned by the chairman of the Transport Authority, Mr F. B. Logan, Calderwood said that at the present time he was running a large car over the route instead of his omnibus. That car was capable of carrying seven passengers. He admitted that he had not yet taken out a certificate of fitness for his car, but that he had already obtained the form from the secretary of the Transport Department. Mr Logan: You can’t run your car along the route until the certificate is obtained, you know. Mr Logan then intimated that the consideration of the license would be adjourned until a future meeting of the authority, meanwhile Calderwood was warned from running his car until bis certificate of fitness was obtained.
