WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
PUKAHU GROUP. The monthly meeting of the Pukahu Women’s Institute was held on Saturday, when Mrs Lockie presided over a fair attendance of members. The meeting opened with singing the Institute Song, after which the business of the afternoon was quickly despatched. Resolutions from different sister institutes, which are to be put before the Federation meeting to be held in Napier on April 26, were freely discussed, most of which met with the approval of members. Mrs Lockie was chosen as the delegate to the annual meeting in Napier. Several visitors were welcomed, including Mrs Joll (president of the W.D.F.U.) (Mrs Honeybun (Havelock Institute), Mrs Riggar (president of Northern H.B. Federation), and Mrs Hugh Baird (Hastings). Mrs Baird gave a most inspiring talk on her trip through England, and so vividly did the speaker portray the different places visited that the members listened with keen interest and enjoyed the humourous anecdotes interspersed throughout the delightful talk. Later Mrs Baird recited “Searching for Ezra,” and was accorded a hearty vote of thanks, as also was Mrs Riggar, who spoke on the aims and ideals of the Women’s Institute. The speaker said that at present throughout New Zealand there were 569 institutes with a membership of 36,000, which showed what a wonderful growth the movement had made in a few short years, and this impressed upon the members the importance of co-operation and loyalty to their president and committee. A dainty tea was dispensed, by the committee, after which Mrs Baird kindly judged the competition for the best article made from a sugar-bag. Competition was very keen, and ome most useful and decorative articles exhibited. Mrs Lang came first with an eiderdown quilt; Mrs H. Evans second with a pretty cushion, and Mrs Kirkham third with a most useful work bag. A roll call for suggestions for programmes for the ensuing month brought forth some interesting proposals. The competition for May is to be an article not to cost more than one shilling. Mrs Mulqueenie, Mrs Hutchison, and Miss Corrigan from Rissington, are attending in May, and giving interesting demonstrations on wool rugs and spinning, etc. A very happy afternoon concluded with the singing of the National Anthem. PUKETAPU BRANCH. The usual monthly meeting of the Puketapu Women’s Institute was held on Thursday afternoon, Mrs Boyd presiding over a large attendance of members. Business matters were discussed and Mrs G. Smale was appointed delegate to the conference to be held in Christchurch in July. It was arranged to hold a masquerade and fancy dress ball in May in aid of institute funds. A card evening, Puketapu versus Taradale, was also arranged, to take place after Easter. Two amusing competitions, horse drawing and walking a chalk line, were won by Miss Strachan and Mrs Anderson. A very dainty afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mrs. White and Mrs. and Miss Stevens. The singing of the National Anthem brought the meeting to a close.
