BUTTERFLY CONTROL
GREATER INTEREST NEEDED. PREVENTION OF FURTHER LOSS. The progress of the “Tribune” fund for the control of white butterflies has ceased to expand. The total of the fund now stands at £B4 10/-, leaving £l5 10/- to be raised before April 30. We appeal to fanners and other interested members of the community to assist this fund and thereby enable a fresh supply of parasites to be obtained. In a letter forwarded to this paper a correspondent says: “It is amazing that there- is so much difficulty in collecting the £lOO that is required for your White Butterfly Control Fund. Some people evidently cannot realise the position. The butterfly plague spells the greatest loss to Hawke’s Bay that has ever happened; in fact, the whole island will shortly be affected with this pest. I hear that the butterfly has been seen and felt in the Hamilton district, so evidently it is spreading rapidly. I think that you can allow another year before the pest is felt in
other parts as badly as it is here. No rape, no ehou moellier, no swedes or soft turnips—and where will the fat lamb industry of Hawke’s Bay be, particularly with those lambs which can not be fattened off the mothers?” To which we can only rejjly —Nowhere. If other people would only realise this, the need for constant appeals having to be issued would not exist. Unless this scourge—the white butterfly—is checked now, one of the most valuable of New Zealand's primary industries will bo ruined. There is no getting away from the fact that fat lamb raising is one of the few branches of the pastoral industry that is paying its way. Help this effort that the “Tribune” is making for the benefit of the farming and gardening community. This is no time to say, “Oh, this doesn’t concern me.” It doos. Unless the pest is checked now while there are possibilities of control, there is no knowing what may happen. Prevent the spread. Control the pest biologically, and help by sending a contribution to-day.
