NAPIER HARBOUR BOARD

CHAIRMAN'S BRIEF REVIEW OF YEAR'S WORK. TRIBUTE TO CO-OPERATION OF MEMBERS AND STAFF. “As this is the last meeting of the board as it is at present constituted, 1 wish to take the opportunity of thanking members for their co-opera-tion during the past 12 months,” said Mr T. M. Geddis at yesterday’s meeting of the Napier Harbour Board. “There have at times been differences of opinion, but we have during the j ear definitely accomplished a good deal. As far as the harbour question is concerned the board obtained a report upon the serious position caused by the earthquake and subsequently b< siltation. In consequence the board set up a committee to make recommendations, and the matter is now before the Loans Board. The Ahuriri Lagoon drainage scheme ha s been the cause of a tremendous lot of work, and the board is now awaiting the final decision of the Government and the Unemployment Board regarding it. In regard to its endowments, the board has been able to settle quite a large area, while the Government proposes to carry out a settlement policy in the Richmond block. “1 wish to thank the deputy-chair-man, Mr E. J. Herrick, and the chairmen of the various committees, Messrs Barker, Cato, and Higgins, for the large amount of work they have done, and for their co-operation. So far as the staff is concerned I have never seen such a big business run so capably. From the secretary down they have been most loyal; in fact, they have been a first-class staff and willing to co-operate in every way.” Mr E. J. Herrick, in acknowledging the chairman’s remarks, said that the board had been most fortunate in having such an efficient man as Mr Geddis as chairman. He had been most courageous and most impartial. Mr R. McLean said that although he was relinquishing other public duties he intended again to offer his services as a representative on the board.
