HASTINGS M.G. PLATOONS BIVOUAC CAMP. COURSE OF INSTRUCTION. A bivouac camp was held over the week-end, when 21 n.c.o.’s and men of the Hastings Machine Gun Platoons of the Hawke’s Bay Regiment, under Lieutenants F. R. Mcßride, L. R. Hampton, and S.S.M. W. J. Fisher, N.Z.P.S., went through a course of instruction in the handling and firings of the Vicker machine guns. A very high standaid of efficiency was attained during the course, and it is felt that when the annual training camp is held the standard will be even higher. A night shoot was conducted from 900 yards, all service conditions being observed, and at the conclusion the targets revealed the accuracy of the practice, for the percentage of hits was remarkably high. A strong side wind was blowing during the shoot, and with these conditions it must be considered a very successful shoot. The machine gun classification course was conducted. All members, with one exception, passed the test for a firstclass machine gunner’s badge. Oue member, although being short by two points in this test, easily passed his “M.G. ’’ test. Apart from the above two practices, a direct shoot and an indirect exercise were held, and in both of these the targets were hit at practically the opening bursts, despite a strong wind, and in view of the fact that in each instance the range was 1500 yards. Regiment do not devote all their time to military work, for they have a sports club of their own, and indoor sports such as Badminton and Tenniquoits are indulged in, and in the near future they hope to enlarge upon their activities, and arc looking forward to military and sporting activities in the winter months.
