CAR’S CRASH INTO STREAM
GOES OVER BANK WITH OCCUPANTS. AUCKLAND, April 9. A narrow' escape from fatal injuries and drowning was experienced by Mr K. M. Wright, of Ngaruawahia, engineer of the Ragland County Council. D’Auvergne, and were motoring along the Waingaro land road, which is narrow, to Ngauruwahia. When at a point four and a half miles from the Waingaro Springs Hotel the steering wheel of Ihe car failed to act. Mr Wright, who was driving, nearly succeeded in stopping the car with the brakes, tout before he could do
so the car fell over the bank for a dis 4 tance of 25 feet into the stream below. The water was over four feet deep, and Mr and Mrs Wright were pinned under the ear in the water. Mr Wilson was thrown clear, however, and he quickly extricated Mr and Mrs Wright from their perilous position. A doctor was summoned from Ngauruwahia, and several men employed at a timber mill in the vicinity were calk’d and rendered good service in carrying Mr and Mrs Wright from the stream to the road on a gate improvised as a stretcher. Mr and Mrs Wright both suffered severely from shock. Mr Wright had several ribs broken, and was severely bruised. Mrs Wright had tier collarbone broken. Mr Wilson injured hie left leg. Mr ami Mrs Wright were removed to the Waikato Hospital, and it is stated that their condition to day ii much improved.
