ATTENTION TO IGNITION

REMOVING DIRT AND DUST. Reliable as the modern electrical equipment has proved, it will not go on indefinitely without any attention, as many owner-drivers seem to irnagine. It is essential occasionally to examine the distributor head, which can easily be removed by releasing two spring clips, There is always a ten. denev for dirt and dust to collect in the head between the segments, aud short-circuiting might occur if it is not cleaned. The result would be that the spark will occur in one or other of the cylinders not on the firing stroke, causing misfiring and uneven running. Wipe the distributor round with a soft cloth, whilst any signs of moisture must also be dried out thoroughly. In the modern distributor, the rotor is a blade of metal which rotates inside the head and sparks jump from the blade to the segments; the dust which collects in this type is not so likely, however, to cause trouble with shortcircuiting as would be found in the older type of distributor, wherein a carbon brush is used. This tends to leave a trail of oarbon between each segment and cause “tracking.’’ It is essential to remove this carbon dust at regular intervals. The carbon brush will last for some thousands of miles, but when eventually wear does occur it can easily be renewed. Care should be taken, however, to see that the fine coil spring attached to the brush is in good order.
