REP. TRIAL GAMES HASTINGS A DEFEATS NAPIER A. THREE INTER-TOWN MATCHES COMPLETED. The Hastings v. Napier representative trial matches were completed at Hastings and Napier on Saturday, ideal weather prevailing. There was a large crowd of enthusiasts to watch the games. The principal game was at Napier, where the A eleveus met. Hastings secured a first innings win by 17 runs, Lambert making 69. At Hastings the home B team lost to the visiting side by 45 runs on the first innings. The Napier C eleven also secured a first innings win, the margin being 12.1 runs. B TEAMS AT PLAY. HASTINGS SIDE BEATEN. The B teams played at Cornwall Park, Hastings, where the previous week Napier had just commenced their reply' to Hastings’ 121. The visitors ran their score to 166, Turvey increasing his overnight contribution to 46 and R. Barlow making 40. Hastings occupied the wicket for the remainder of the afternoon, though they made a poor opening. When stumps were drawn five wickets had fallen for 132 runs, McCarthy being not out for 51. FRIENDLY GAMES MATCH AT RISSINGTON An enjoyable cricket match was played at Rissington, when an eleven captained by Mr W. Hughes was defeated by the country players by 84 runs. Napier batted first and made 170, the best display being given by Ryan, who scored 59. Boland made 24, Pirie 22, Triggs 21 and Forsyth 12. Bowling for Rissington, Eaton took three wickets for 33 and H. Howell one for 13. Rissington replied with 254, a fine display being given by Pope, who scored 110. Others to reach double figures were F. Howell 48, Williams 38 and Eaton 21. Napier’s successful bowlers were Boland (two for 32), Mangelsen (four for 40), Hughes (two for 36), Mackinnon (two for 31) and Pirie (one for 11). PICNICKERS BEAT ROACH’S During the weck-eni the Hastings Picnic Club’s cricket team defeated an eleven selected from Roach’s Ltd., Hastings. The game was played on the Polo ground. Batting first Roach’s made 78, mainly due to Wilcock making 21 and Simpson and MacDonald 14 each. H. Love took five of the wickets at a eost of 19 runs, W. Love took two and Marquet, Stenson and Mitchell one a-prece. The Picnickers replied with 9, Jonson heading the list with 43 and H. Love next with 26. Simpson collected five wrekets for 27 runs and Stitt four for 30, the remaining wicket going to Wilcock. Roach’s set the pace in their second strike and ran up 131 runs, MacDonald scoring 23, Orr 19, Blaekie 17, Simpson 15, Wilcock 15, and Stitt 11. H. Love added a further 4 wiekets costing 20 runs to his collection, Stenson and Ross took two eac hand W. Love and Marquet one each. The Picnickers also improved on their first innngs effort and made 121 runs for the loss of three wickets and so gained an outright win. W. Love and Mitchell were both not out for 25 and Stenson and H. Love each made 24. TOBACCO COMPANY DEFEATED. A friendly match played between the National Tobacco Company’s eleven and Swailes’ resulted in a victory for the latter team by 28 runs. The To bacco Company made 167, a fine display being given by Lydford, who scored 67 (10 fours). Goslyn made 42 not out, McEwan 17 and Boyd 12. Potter took four wickets for three runs, Mathews three for 10, Johnson two for five and A. Swailes one for nine. Swailes’ replied with 195, Mathews scoring 101 (retired). His knock included two sixes and 17 fours. Potter, with, 42, was the only other batsman to reach double figures. OTHER FRIENDLY GAMES. Friendly one-day matches were also played between the Napier clubs. Technical 0.8. defeated Technical Colts by
20 runs. Old Boys made 126 (Pirie 4IJ and the Colts 106 (Horsefield 45 not out). Seinde defeated United A by 24 runs. Scinde made 153 (Pell 47) and United A 129 (Seed 24). H. 5.0.8., who made 253, proved too strong for Taradale, who mude 142. Old Boys’ best batsman was Armitage, who retired at 50, while Whitton made 39 for Taradale. BHERENDEN v. GRAND XL ENJOYABLE AFTERNOON. The Shercnden cricket team ventured forth from their highlands to do battH with the Grand XI at the Polo Grounds Flags and white boundary lines were absent, and the wicket had not had the best of attention; nevertheless, a most enjoyable game was played. The Grand eleven were fortunate to win from their better balanced opponent!, Shercnden batted first and were dis' missed for 112 runs, Skipper Chapman 25, Boyd 37, Earl 15 being the best scorers. A feature of the attack waa "Dapper” Moore’s sterling perfornaauce with the ball, he taking three wie* kets for two runs. Tom Milne cajj> tured three wickets for 16. The Grand eleven made 126, Mahon!® 52, Milne 24, Rangi T. W. 24—a1l aV tractive knocks. Geddis and All Black Lambert failed to get going, the latter being cleverly trapped by Boyd to go l.b.w. for one run Shercnden completed another compiling 117, Earl 67 not out, Boyd 21, Tombleson 13, being the highest scorere. Bowling for Grand, Lambert took font for 44, and Moore four for 23. Bert Moore is to be Congratulated on his season’s consistency, and this province is unfortunate that he is unable to play in official Saturday games. Hie bowling yesterday was unplayable. ‘Tut’’ Geddis gave a rare display behind the wickets. A delightful afternoon tea added to the general enjoyment of the match, which was won by Grand by 14 rune on the first innings. Any clubs desiring to play at the Polo Grounds in future would be ads vised to communicate with Jack Booth. Twyford.
