CONSTABLE’S REQUEST REFUSED
TAXI-DRIVER FINED £5. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, March 17. When on duty at Takapuna racecourse on January 30, a. constable arrested two men for fighting. He took them to the road and requested a taxidriver to take him and them to Auckland. The taxi-driver refused and today he was charged with failing to assist a constable and failing to drive to a place as directed by a constable. The defence contended that the taxidriver, who was named Robert Hustler. had offered to take the constable and the prisoners to the Devonport ferry wharf and that it was unreasonable to expect birn to leave the stand and drive to the city. The Magistrate said it was a very serious matter. A crowd had gathered round the constable, who had troublesome prisoners, and it was a bit of impudence on the defendant’s part to refuse the request. The defendant was fined £5.
