HEAD-ON COLLISION
TWO YOUNG MEN KILLED. MOTOR CYCLE BURSTS INTO FLAMES. By Telegraph—Press Association. Ashburton, March 17. Christopher Tait, aged 23, and Stanley Meldnim, aged 20, both single, were killed in a head-on collision With a motor lorry when riding a motor cycle a mile from Methven at 9 o’clock last night. Tait, who resides in Methven, was in charge of the cycle and Meldrum, whose parents reside at Rangiora, was on the pillion. The cycle suddenly burst into flames, setting fire to Tait’s clothes. He lost control and the cycle hurtled into the lorry, which was ap approaching. People were soon on the scene and ripped the burning clothes from Tait, who expired as he was lifted into a car which was ready to take him to hospital. Meldrum was brought to Ashburton Hospital and was operated on immediately. He died at P o’clock this morning. His injuries were of a shocking nature. Later enquiries show that the fire occurred after the collision. It is stated that the cycle had no lights and the lorry only a spotlight. Tait wa*gcd 26 and Mc'drum 33.
