MATRON’S DISMISSAL
THE WAIHI HOSPITAL. INQUIRY BY DEPARTMENT. Waihi, March 16. Following the recent inquiry into trouble between the matron, Miss M. K. Stevenson, and members of the domestic staff at the Waihi Hospital, and tho decision of the Hospital Board to give Miss Stevenson three months’ notice of termination of her engagement, a full report of the inquiry was forwarded to the Director-General of Health, Dr. M. R. Watt. There was also sent to him a petition calling for a public inquiry on the ground that the evidence did not justify the dismissal of the matron. The matter was again brought up at the meeting of tho board last evening by a letter from Dr. Watt, who stated that after perusal of the report he could not agree on the facts before him that the board was justified in dismissing Miss Stevenson. At the same time ho did not consider tho matter called for a public inquiry. He was arranging for Dr. R. A. Shore to visit Waihi and conduct a departmental inquiry, more particularly into the circumstances of the matron’s dismissal.
This, added Dr. Watt, was not only necessary in the interests of the parties concerned, but also in the interests of the running of tho institution. Dr. Shore, accompanied by Mr A. V. Kiesenberg, secretary of tho department, is expected to arrive in Waihi on Tueselday, March 28. The board received the letter.
