HAWKE’S RAY COUNTY WORK DONE DURING FEBRUARY. ENGINEER ’8 REPORT. The following report on the work carried out on the various highways during the past month was placed before members of the. Hawke’s Bay County Council yesterday by the engineer, Mr R. Pufflett:— Napier-Gisborne (.16 miles): Grading was carried out on the Embankment ami a commencement was made in reerecting the damaged fence; this work will be completed next month. Heavy grading was done on the WestshorePetane section, and in places patching was carried out with clay and. red metal. General surface work was done on the section between Petane and the Esk river, and grading carried out. Grading was also done between the Esk and the Lagoon. i’ctaue-Taupo (28 miles): General surface work was carried out on the Esk Valley-Dillon’s Hill section of the highway; watertables were cleaned and culverts attended to. Minor metal patching was Gone and grading carried out. Between Dillon’s Hill and Te Poliue grading was done and watertables and culverts cleaned.

Napier-Wellington (294 miles): Grading was carried out to the shoulders of the pavement between Napier and Earudou. Asphalt repairs were done on the Awatoto-YVaitangi section. Between Farndon and Pakowhai grading was done anal decking repairs carried out to the small Pakowhai bridge. The wing fences were also renewed. Grading was done on the section between the Pakowhai bridge and the asphalt pavement. The Aerodrome-Paki Paki section was also graded. The. asphalt pavement was widened at the corner near the Paki Paki brickworks. Napier-Tuki Tuki, via Umaliu (19 miles): The second seal coat of bitumen was applied to the section near the Napier borough boundary and the bridge approaches on the Taradale road. Minor decking repairs were curried out to Redcliyffe bridge, and the approaches made up. Grading was done on the Redelyffe-Omahu section and repairs to the decking of the Waima bridge carried out. The Fernhill bridge repair work is being carried out satisfactorily and will be finished next month. Grading was done on the FernhillStortford Lodge section. Taradale - Rissington (13 miles): Grading was carried out on the Tara-dale-Hakowhai section ami general surface work done. Watertables and culverts were cleaned on the Apley road and grading done. The Apley-Rissing-ton section was graded and general surface work attended to. I'amdon-Hastings (5 miles): The shoulders of the concrete pavement were graded, and the unpaved portion of the highway near the Karamu bridge w-as also scarified and graded. Tuki Tuki-Elsthorpe (15 miles): General surface work was carried out and culverts and watertables cleaned. Overhanging vegetation was cut back, and bridge approaches cleared of grass and weeds.

Hustings-Maraekakaho (9 miles); Grading was carried nut on this highway and general surface work done. Watertables were cleaned and culverts attended to.

Fernhill-Takapau (15 miles): Watertables and culverts were cleaned on this highway and general surface work done. Grading was carried out in places and the surface was scarified to remove potholes and corrugations. The water-crossing was surfaced and approaches made up. Mangateretere-Havelock North (2 miles): Grading was carried out and in places the surface was scarified to remove corrugations. Watertables and culverts were cleaned and general surface work done.

Hastings-Paki Paki (34 miles): Grading was carried out and general surface work done. Good progress is being made in lifting up and re-forming portion of this highway; the work is being carried out with the assistance of relief labour. The metalling of the new road is being carried out in a satisfactory manner. Approximately 60 chains of this work is now complete.

Awanga (7) miles): Grading was done and in places the surface was scarified to remove potholes and corrugations. Watertables and culverts were cleaned and bridge approaches surfaced. Petane-Eskdale (21 miles): This highway was graded periocMcally during the month, and in places scarifying was done to remove corrugations. General surface work was carried out and watertables and culverts cleaned. Tuki Tuki-Waimaraina (12 miles): Grading was carried out and general surface work done. Watertables were cleaned and culverts attended to. Overhanging vegetation was cut back and bridge approaches surfaced.
