WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

TE HAPKE BRANCH The monthly meeting of the Te Hauke Women’s Institute was held at the Mission House on Thursday. The members met on the verandah where a most interesting talk on Ceylon was given by Mrs Turner-Williams, of Havelock North Everyone enjoyed the able description of the tea. paddy and rubber cultivation. Pictures and articles illustrating native customs were handed round and one member was draped in native material showing street, working and wet weather dress. Miss M. Donald proposed a vote of thanks to Mrs Williams, which was carried with musical honours. After an enjoyable tea a pleasant social half-hour was spent, one of the visitors singing a solo The singing of the National Anthem brought to a close a very enjoyable and instructive afternoon. HAVELOCK NORTH. There was a particularly good attendance at the annual meeting held on Wednesday last, when Mrs ChapmanTaylor presided, and three new members were welcomed. Proceedings opened with the Institute song, and various matters of business were dealt with. The annual report and balancesheet, disclosing a satisfactory state of affairs, were read and adopted. Then came nominations for the Federation executive committee, after which Mrs Coleman spoke for a few moments about the Hawke’s Bay Children’s Home and its needs. Voting then went forward briskly, and resulted as follows: —President, Mrs Chapman Taylor, committee, Mesdamcs Biggar, Bridgman, Chapman Taylor, Denton, Gilbertson, Goldfinch, Greenwood, Haggett, Honeybun, B. Williams, and Misses Crombie and Fox. After tea the rest of the afternoon was of a social nature, an opera-glass race causing much merriment; Mrs Frost and Miss Sanson were the prizewinners. Notice was given of two competitions to be held at the May meeting, one for a child’s knitted singlet up to two years, the other for a pair of child’s slippers made from old material. The rest of the potatoes were handed in, and the prize went to Mrs Hill, with 211 b. It was decided to bold a garden party on March 25, and Mrs Greenwood’s offer of her grounds for the occasion was gratefully accepted. A strong committee has been set up, and further particulars will be announced later. Mr Stratton and Mr Leigh acted as tellers, and were cordially thanked for their kindly help. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdamcs D. Boyle, Cooper, Farmery, Fielding, Hill, Norwell, Smith, and Miss Coombe.
