HIGH SCHOOL CRICKET

NAPIER v. GISBORNE. HOMESTERS SCORE 108. The annual cricket match between the first elevens of the Napier and Gisborne Boys’ High Schools was commenced at Nelson Park, Napier, this morning. Weather conditions were ideal, but the wicket favoured the bowlers, being soft and damp with tho morning’s dew. Napier won the toss and batted first, making 108. Tho innings lasted 135 minutes. The opening batsmen failed to establish a partnership, for Mahony was caught off Wilson in the latter’s second over. His partner, Younghusband, batted patiently and remained undefeated at the end of the innings after scoring 35. The next four wickets fell for 29, after which Bickerstaff joined Younghusband and the pair made a stand, adding 28 before the latter was caught off White after scoring 25. The remaining four batsmen added 46 runs, bringing the total score up to 108, tho best display being given by Morrissey, the last man in, who made 12. The fielding of the Gisborne boys was ,of a high standard, the throwing in to the wicket-keeper being exceptionally good. The Napier batsmen last many chances by exceptionally poor running between the wickets. In this department of the game, Carson and Flavell, Gisborne’s opening pair, gave an object lesson of perfect understanding between the wickets. Gisborne commenced their first innings a quarter of an hour before the luncheon adjournment, at which stage the opening batsmen shared 20 runs between them.
