VEILMOND WINS KING'S PLATE. NEW ZEALANDERS PROMINENT. Melbourne, March 8. The weather was fine and the attendance good at the races. The New Zealand-bred Panjandrum had a narrow win in the Elms Handicap. It has now had four starts and three wins unbeaten in Victoria. Break Up, owned by the trainer, Phar Lap’s mentor, Mr H. Telford, had an impressive win in the first division of the Gibson-Carmichael Stakes. It was his first success. The New Zealand-bred Miramond, despite in' rfercnce early in the race, finished brilliantly to win the second division of the Gibson-Carmichael Stakes. The trainer, Jamieson, also has Panjandrum. Wirrate had a comfortable win in the Autumn Steeple. Its trainer and owner, Mr Vin O’Neill, won the Melbourne Cup with Spearfelt. Great Night had a sterling win in the Bourko Handicap. This is his fourth success in his last five starts. Dominant won a division of this event last year. There was a great struggle in the King’s Plate. Veilmond challenged the pace-maker, Cimbrian, at the distance. The latter hung on and was just beaten in the last stride. Oratory and Yarramba were disappointing and Gaine Carrington was only a moderate third. Pike, the rider of Veilmond, won the race previously on Phar Lap. Gossiper was well placed all the way and won the River Handicap nicely, j Topical finished well. The placed horses are engaged in the Cup. Royal Rest was fourth. Time, 1.38, a race record. Gibson-Carmichael Stakes, of 210 sovs.—First division: Break Up (7.2) I, Nuit d’Or (6.10) 2, Kulajah (7.11) 3. Thirteen starters. Won by a neck, | third half a length back. Exelic was I fourth. Time, 1.25, a race record, j Second Division, of 210 sovs.—Miramond (7.9) I, Danilo (6.13) 2, Cassius (7.12) 3. Eleven starters. Won by uno and three quarter lengths, third a length back. Snowacre was fourth. Time, 1.25 J. Autumn Steeple, of 350 sovs.—Wirrate (10.3) 1, Baverlad (9.11) 2, Lanilda (9.13) 3. Eleven starters. Won by four lengths, third three lengths back. Exclusive was fourth. Time, j 4.0. Bourke Handicap, of 450 sovs.— Great Night (8.0) J, Dominant (8.9) 2, Valmist (9.6) 3. Ninteen started. Won by half a neck, third one and three quarters of a lengths back. Sonnies’ was fourth. Time, 1.24, equals the I ourse record. King’s Plate, of 700 sovs.—Veilmond J. Pike) 1, Cimbrian (K. Bracken) 2, Gaine Carrington (Duncan) 3. Seven -tarters. Won by half a head, third two and a half lengths back. Eastern Chief was fourth.
