FRUIT EMBARGO

GOVERNMENT ACTION SOUGHT. Sydney, March 3. A deputation representing the Fruitgrowers’ Federation of New South Wales waited on the Attorney-General (Mr Latham) and the Minister for Health (Mr Marr) in Sydney yesterday, and suggested that a. representative of the Commonwealth Government should visit New Zealand to discuss the position of trade between that country and Australia, particularly in relation to the embargo on fruit. The Government was asked to take active steps to relieve the position of fruit exporters by a removal of the embargo on New Zealand fruit, seeing that ths embargo was seriously affecting their trade. The deputation was introduced by Mr S. L. Gardiner, M.P., and Mr Walker, M.L.A. Mr Latham said that the embargo on Australian fruit had been imposed, not as a general retaliatory measure, but it was largely because of the restriction imposed by the Australian Government to prevent the introduction of fireblight to Australia. The Governmeftt was fully seized with the importance of trade with New Zealand, and it would do its utmost to reach a satisfactory settlement of the matter. He quoted the opinions of State experts showing that it would be unwise to raise any of fhe restrictions against the importation of New Zealand fruit for the present.
