WAIPUKURAU
NEWS AND NOTES. (Special Representative.) A violent thunderstorm broke over Waipukurau and district in the early hours of yesterday morning, lasting for about half an hour. Vivid flashes of lightning lit up the countryside for some distance, whilst the peals of thunder were almost deafening in their intensity. Despite the severity of the storm, no damage has been reported. The areas visited wore from Porangahau and the coast districts to Waipukurau, and Ongaonga and Tikokino. The Waipukurau branch of the Plunket Society held a successful shop day yesterday when an excellent array of cakes, confectionery, produce, fancy goods, etc., was displayed for sale. Competitions were won by the following:—Box of chocolates, Miss P. Lorrigan; socks, Mrs Jamieson 1, Mrs Seatcr 2; dinner, Mr N. Wylie; iced cake, Mrs E. 0. Dowriek. It is estimated that the branch will benefit to the extent, of £3O The Wellington Artillery Band, at present in camp at Waipukurau, paid an official visit to the Public Hospital yesterday afternoon, and provided the patients with an excellent programme of selected music. At the conclusion of the concert the bandsmen were entertained to a most enjoyable afternoon tea by the nursing staff. On the eve of his departure for Auckland, on transfer, Mr Jack Elliott, of the Public Trust Office, was farewelled last evening by a number of friends and fellow cricketers. On behalf of the Old Boys Cricket Club, of which the guest was a valuable member, Mr R. Guy presented Mr Elliott with a small token expressing his and the club's regret at his departure. Mr Elliott suitably responded. The quarterly meeting of the Waipukurau Fire Board was held last evening, Mr W. G. Bryce presiding over Messrs E. J. Turner, E. C. Hall and D. E, Watson (insurance representatives), J. A. Chambers (brigade superintendent), and the secretary, Mr IL B. Smart, A grant of £l5 was made towards the expenses of the Waipukurau Fire Brigade at Carterton, The estimates, amounting to £355 were considered by the board, and approved. Mr N. E. Lamont, of Waipukurau, is
at present relieving the postmaster at Porangahau, Mr J. E. Douglas.
