BROOKFIELDS OVERFLOW

WORK BY UNEMPLOYEQ. • RIVERS BOARD DISCUSSION The question of whether the Hurte** Bay Rivers Board was getting vain* for the money expended on the work being done by relief workers on the overflow at Brookfields was raised at the Febreary meeting, and a committee was pointed to consider if improvemonte eould not be effected. At yesterday’s meeting the chairman, Mr W. G. Jarvis, stated that the committee visited the locality where the work was in progress and found that the mon were doing aa much as could be done under the circumstances. The men were pushing trucks containing about a yard of spoil, and it was thought by the committee that conditions would be improved by; using horses to haul the loaded tracks. It was then agreed that two horses should be used for the work to give it a try out The completing of the track would obviate a lot of delay. Although the horses had since been used, he understood that the result was eon* where about the same. PUT ON TO SOUTH BANK. Mr Lassen said it was agreed that by putting on the horses the men eould be relieved and put on to the south bank. The chairman: It was necessary to get the tracks and trucks from Haumoana, and in the meantime a motion came forward to stop all work. Was the chairman justified in proceeding under such circumstances! Once the board made up its mind the work could be gone on with. Mr Talbot remarked that he was surprised that with the horses it was not working out cheaper for the board. • Mr Harris: What has it cost the board during the last month! Mr Lassen: £BO.

Mr Harris: Does anyone think that the board has received £BO worth of work! To me it is extaordinary making a big bank like the board proposes, with no bank at all further on. Mr J. H. Sheath: Mr Harris complained about the soil from the channel being placed on the sides, and since it has been thrown over the bank.

The overseer explained that the genr was ready to start the work of putting in the foundations, and with the layout for the next track, he was satisfied that there would be greater progress made. Mr W. H. Campbell: This affects the policy of the board, and as a motion is coming on dealing with any further work, this discussion should be held over until that motion has been dealt with. The board agreed to the suggestion made by Mr Campbell. When the matter was raised later, Mr Lassen suggested that all the work in connection with the channel automatically ceased as the result of a motion that the board had just carried The report of the committee was then received.
