RIVER PROTECTION
FARNDON AND PUNINGA. ERECTION OF A BANK. The erection of a bank to give protection to a number of settlers of Famdon and Puninga as requested recently by a deputation was before the Hawke's Bay Rivers Board yesterday, it being decided after discussion that the matter be left to a small committee with power to act. “Surely the board is going to proceed with this work for the benefit of these people,” said the chairman, Mr W. G. Jarvis. “We can’t after the motion that has just been passed,” said Mr Lassen. Mr Jarvis: You say that nothing is to be done. I just want to know where you stand in the matter. Mr Harris then moved that a committee be set up to report on the erecting of a small bank on the south side of the overflow. Mr Jarvis: That is rather strange after passing a resolution that nothing be done. Mr H. R. Clarke: If there is one motion on the minute book, there is a dozen in my name asking for this bank. It has always been opposed by the members of Nos. 4 and 5 wards and supported by those of Nos. 1 and 2 wards. Mr H. H. Burns: That is right up to a point. We were elected to the board with express instructions to oppose the bank. The time has come for those obstructions to be removed. The Clive people were afraid of •sending the water direct on to themselves, and we opposed the bank so long as it was to be for an overflow. Now that it is a diversion it is a different matter. Mr Clarke: I have tried for years to get the bank, but have not been able to. Further, there has not been any unanimity of opinion as to where the bank should go. A committee consisting of Messrs Lassen, Talbot and Macdonald was appointed to consider the matter with power to act.
