WATCHING AND BESETTING
CASES AT LONGBURN FREEZING WORKS.
MAGISTRATE’S RESERVED JUDGMENT DELIVERED. By Telegraph—Press Association Palmerston N., March 8. Reserved judgment was given by Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., in the eases heard early in February alleging watching and besetting at Longburn freezing works in December. The magistrate said in reference to what had been termed “peaceful picketing” that such conduct camo within the meaning of the Police Offences Act. It was not necessary that there be violence to ensure intimidation. He added that in fixing the fines where the accused were found guilty he had made them as light as possible. He declined to allow witness’s expenses. William Frederick Watson, John Decleene, Leo Dennan, Eric Charles Flanagan, Stephen James Havill, Francis Kale and James Learmouth were each fined £6 for wiftching and besetting. A number of others were convicted of using bad language.
