The monthly meeting of the Waipukurau County Council was held on Saturday morning, the chairman, Air A. C. Russell, presiding over Crs. L. W. Bishop, P. F. Wall, L. AL Alonckton, J. A. Swinburn, W. Matthews, W. .L Edgecombe, A. W. Elliott, Al. Tanscy, and the enginccr-clerk, Mr R. B. Price. A letter was received from a num her of residents in Takapau road draw ing attention to an alleged unhealthy smell emanating from piggeries nearby, and asking that the council have them removed, as the petitioners considered them a menace to the public health.— The matter was referred to the health inspector. Th Waipukurau town clerk wrote soliciting a donation towards the main tenance of the cemetery.—A grant of £lO was made, the chairman referring in eulogistic terms to the excellent manner in which the cemetery was kept and its generally neat and orderly

appearance. He congratulated the borough council on its work in this connection. The Auditor-General requested that the council notify him what action had been taken by the council in the matter of obtaining exemption from the operation of the Dogs Registration Act. Cr. 'Wall expressed his regret at the council not being granted an exemption from the tax, stating that the farmers were sufficiently irritated without having a further tax thrust on them. He contended that if the county had to enforce the tax it should make it 1/for rabbit dogs, sheep dogs 1/- for each up to three, and 2/6 for each additional dog, sporting and pet dogs 2/6. —Cr. Wall’s suggestion was embodied in a motion and carried. ENGINEER’S REPORT. The county engineer (Mr R. B. Price) reported as follows :— Hatuma Hiding: Trucks have delivered 334 cubic yards of pit metal to the Hatuma highway, the road being built up on the low side. The elm trees on the side of this road have been topped and traffic cun now use the whole width without the danger of striking tho lower branches. An old wooden culvert on the Napier-Welling-ton highway has been replaced bv a line of concrete pipes. The job has not been completed owing to the recent rain but will be gone on with at the earliest possible moment. The power grader lias worked five days raking in shingle on the Napier-Wellington highway, three days on the WaipukurauHatuma highway, and three days on riding roads. The fence on the Hatuma corner has been set back as decided by the committee in whose hands the matter was left. Mt. Herbert Riding: General work has been cairied out in this riding, the grader having worked two days on the Porangahau main highway and two days on riding roads. The widening on Mangatarata Hill is being done as men under the No. 5 scheme are available. Purimu Riding: The work of blinding on Robinson's Hill is still in progress, the total wages to date being £6 12/6. A temporary fence was put around a piece of Mr W. J. Edgecombe’s property to allow the work to proceed. Mr Edgecombe will allow the council to fence off a large portion as a metal reserve for further use, and I would suggestion that this be done as the limestone showing is better than any other metal on that road. The grader has trimmed up the roads in this riding and a truck has delivered 32 yards of red metal to a rough portion on Hamilton’s road.
