ATTEMPT TO BLOW UP BRIDGE
LINTON COAL MINE STRIKE LITTLE DAMAGE DONE. Invercargill, March 4. An unexpected development in the dispute affecting work at the Linton coal mines was an attempt at an early hour on Saturday morning to blow up the bridge over which tho company’s private railway runs from the mine tn the main line. The damage was only slight, and repairs should be effected so that work can be resumed to-morrow. A party of ix miners resumed work St the mine on Friday, and it is thought that this alleged disloyalty in the ranks of the unionists was the cause of the drastic action taken. Four shots were fired at about 2.30 a.m., and three piles and some of the decking were blown away. The work of removing coal from the mine was, of course, interrupted on Saturday. Several additional police have been stationed in the distritt since work at the mine was resumed last. Tuesday, and several more were despatched from Invercargill on Saturday. bringing the total up to six. No j particulars of the culprits have yet • been discovered.
