DIVE OFF A PUNT

BOY’S NECK FRACTURED. OPERATION PERFORMED. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, March 6. Last Thursday a Low’er Hutt boy of fifteen dived off a punt at the Pet one beach and struck his head on the floor of the harbour. He was able to get ashore and go home unaided, but it was evident at once that he had received serious injury. He was taken to a private hospital in Wellington, where an X-ray examination showed that one of his neck vertebra was fractured and an other thrust out of position. An operation was performed replacing the damaged segments, and he now lies in hospital encased in plaster of paris. He may have to remain thus for three or four months.

A remarkable feature of the case is that the boy rode a bicycle between two and three miles home from the beach. He says, however, that he was careful to walk the machine over the rough places.
