CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP
FIFTH ROUN© COMPLETED POSITIONS OF PLAYERS Auckland, Dec. 30. The fifth round of the New Zealand chess congress resulted:— Goldstein beat Jones; Rolling beat Scott; Erskine beat Maddox. Draws; Miller v. Severne, Faulknor v. Beyer. The Crackanthorp v. Hicks game was adjourned. At the conclusion of the fifth round the scores were: Goldstein 4| points, Faulknor 3, Crakanthorp, Erskine, Hicks, Severne, Scott each 2|, Kelling 3, Miller IJ, Beyer 1, Maddox J, Jones 0. Games unfinished: Crakanthorp, Kelling, Maddox 2 each, Erskine, Hicks, Miller, Beyer 1 each. The match between Crakanthorp and Hicks went the two full sessions and was adjourned. Crakanthorp is a pawn up, but skill is required to master Hicks’ splendid defence. Goldstein v. Jones.—The latter’s position soon became untenable, and at move 33, Goldstein announced a forced mate in five. Scott made a stubborn fight against Kelling and after six hours’ play and a great struggle in the latter stages against superior forces, resigned. A draw was decided on in the Faulknor v. Beyer game at move 44. The match was even and stubborn.
Maddox lost a piece to Erskine at move 38 and resigned. In the sixth round to-night Severne scored his sixth successive draw, playing against Goldstein. The latter adopted an irregular defence. Severne played both his opening and middle game in good style and never gave Goldstein a chance of positional advantage. A draw was decided on at move 30. Kelling v Crakanthorp—Ray Lopez: The Australian gradually built up a strong king side attack. Just prior to tbe adjournment Crakanthorp sacrificed an exchange and forced a win. Erskine v. Scott.—The game proceeded on hyper-modern lines. At the adjournment Scott was endcavouiing to work up an attack on Erskine’s king. Maddox scored his first win, playing his clnb-mate, Jones. The latter had his sixth successive loss Hicks v Faulknor—French defenc.i Forces level. Beyer v. Miller.—French defence Beyer won by a smart sacrifice.
