THE HASTINGS TOURNEY FINAL DAY'S PLAY. MOSTLY HANDICAP GAMES. Play in the Hastings Tennis Club’s annual tournament was concluded yesterday in ideal weather. Play for the most part was confined to handicap matches, the majority of the championships having already been finalised Play was very keen and interesting and some good games were witnessed The final of the junior ladies’ singles’ championship, between Misses Glenny and Ormond, and the junior men’s singles championship', between Read and Lvnch. will be played to-day. MARLBOROUGH CHAMPIONSHIPS DR. SMYTH’S MEN TITLE Blenheim, Dec. 29. The finals of the Marlborough tennis championships resulted: — Combined doubles.—Smyth and Miss Brown beat Coull and Miss Haggitt, 6—2, 6—4. Men’s doubles.—Smyth and Coull beat Richards and Elliott, 6 —4, 6 —o. Men’s singles.—Smyth beat Coull, 6—l, 4—6, 9—7. Ladies’ doubles.—Misses Gleeson < ; nd Brown beat Misses Wood and Haggitt, 6—3, 2 —6, 6 —2 Ladies’ singles.—Miss D. Wood lieat Miss Haggitt, 6 —3, 6—l. Dr. Smyth, at one tipie doubles champion of New Zealan'd, regained the singles title of Marlborough from Coull. The match was the most stub-bornly-fought final seen in a local tournament for years. The principal features were Coull’s sensational as--1 sumption of his best form- after playing below par for most of the season, and ( Smyth’s determined uphill fight 'n the I Aecvding act.

In a match with many brilliant and exciting moments, Malfroy defeated Andrews, 2 —6, 6—2, 10—8, 6—2, at Miramar to-day, thus winning the men’s ehampionship singles in the Wellington Tennis Association’s annual tournament. The final of the women’s singles was won by Mrs Dykes, 4—6, 10 —8, 6—4, after a splendid match with Miss Nicholls. Other results of finals were: — Men’s doubles. —Wilson and Ferkins beat Franco brothers, 6—3, 2—6, 6—2. 6 —l. Women’s doubles. —Miss Nicholls and Mrs Dykes beat Mrs France and Miss Whyte, 6 —2, B—6. Combined doubles.—Andrews and Miss Nicholls beat Mhlfroy and Mrs Dykes, B—6,8 —6, 6—B, 6—4.
