Arrangements have been made by the committee of the Savage Club for the distribution of the funds raised by members of the chib for providing a little' Christmas cheer for the childjen of the needy. The allocation will not be confined to the children of unemployed relief workers, as it is recognisell' that in many homes where the breadwinner has so far been able to keep off 'the unemployed list little provision be made for Christinas festivities There was a good attendance at the final- of the series of “500” card parties for the evening were Mrs Hereock and Mr T. Hercock. who also won the aggregate awards. For the entertainment of bowlers who may stay home for the holidays two progressive pairs tourneys will be*

held on Monday and Tuesday next, play to commence at 9 a.m. each day. In response to several requests from the northern end of the district the club has decided to run a pairs tournament during the progress of the tennis tourney, the dates selected being January 10 and 11. Flay will commence each day at 9 a.m. The conditions are three bowls, with 21 heads. The entrance fee is 10s a pair, and the prizes £2 to the winners and £1 to the runners-up. As only 16 pairs can be accommodated the entry list will be closed as soon as that number is reached. Mr and Mrs J. H. Hill leave to-day for a motor tour of the West Coast district. Air and Airs J. A. Lockhart will spend the midsummer vacation m camp at Kairakau. As a result of a conference with the Waipukurau Chamber of Commerce Mr A. E. Jull, M.P., wrote to the Minister of Employment in inference to the reduction of the allocation for relief workers. The Minister (the Hon. A. Hamilton) in reply states that he regrets the circumstances necessitating the reduction, but points out that during the winter months the board had to spend consideiably in excess of the limit of its funds, and a reduction was now necessary in order to keep within the limit of its resources. “I fully appreciate,” he states, “the difficulties of relief workers as a result of the expenditure being curtailed, but at the same time X would mention that no centre in the Dominion is receiving funds sufficient to provide a full measure of relief for all eligible applicants, and the board very much regrets that the present allocation must stand.” SUNDAY SCHOOL SOCIAL. The Sunday school prize-giving and social of St. Peter’s Anglican Church was heM in St. Peter’s Hall last evening. The children spent a most enjoyable time with games, recitations and community singing conducted by the Rev. W. T. Drake, Mrs Drake playing the accompaniments. Before giving out the prizes Mr Drake thanked the teachers for the great work they had done during the year in the Sunday school in teaching the children. Mr Drake said he knew of no greater work than Sunday school work, and he greatly appreciated all the teachers had done. He then called on Mrs Drake to present the prizes. AIJ the children in the kindergarten received a prize. Following are the names of the prizewinners in the standards: —Miss Hirst’s class: Margaret Brannigan, Violet Gunn, Teddy Cleary, Betty Hunt, Hubert Drake, Cara Booker, Rena Bolt. Aliss McLean’s class: Joyce Burkin (special), Eddy Burkin (special attendance), Teme Rota, Gordon Whitmarsh, Keith Salchwell. Aliss Gray’s class: Dolly Williams, Mara Booker, Marjorie Mclntyre, Alma Drake, June Gallagher, Pheniia Mclntyre, Elsie Burkin, Ver da Thompson, Elm Booker, Noma Fox, Geoffrey Bibby, Mervyn AlcKay. Supper was provided by the teachers. The singing of the National Anthem concluded a vir.v enjoyable evening.
