RACING AT ELLERSLIE

THE AUCKLAND MEETING. TUESDAY’S TRACK WORK. The weather was fine for training at Ellerslie on Tuesday morning, but a fog hung over the course early, which made timing rather difficult (states the “Star”). However, it cleared within half an hour after work commenced, and the conditions were then ideal. In view of the approach of the Auckland meeting, matters livened up considerably, and the presence of a number of visiting horses added further interest to the proceedings. The course proper, with the poles 40ft. out, was available, and provided excellent going, while the tan and No. 3 grass tracks were also available. Several good gallops were recorded, the fastest sprint of the morning being credited to Sunny Sky and Merry Damon, who sprinted five furlongs on the course proper. Tho Quorn also went particularly well on the same track. Jaloux registered the best gallop on the tan, his time for a round being a really good effort.

The Course Proper. The first to work on the course proper wore tho stablcmatcs Tout 1c Mend and Gay Crest, who were companions over seven furlongs, running tho distance in 1.33 3-5, the final five furlongs taking 1.5 3-5. There was not much between them at the finish, though the three-year-old did his work impressively. Fracas ran a coiiple of furlongs along tho back (from the five to the three) in 24 4-ssee. Karangapai was allotted five furlongs, which he completed in 1.3 3-5. Ho finished up his task in his usual style. Gay Broney was doing better than Mahkill at the conclusion of six furlongs, which occupied 1.22 2-5 t The two-year-olds Deputy Ruler and Glenromney sprinted half a mile in 52 2- They both worked well, and could have improved on tho time. Sir Vai, Demylus, Court Haven and Echo Song were in that order after running seven furlongs in 1.35 3-5. They traversed tho first half-mile in 52 2-ssecs., aud Sir Vai was doing best at tho finish. Cricket Bat worked over seven furlongs, but was not timed. He was going easily at the finish. The Southern two-year-old Epigram was a shade in front of Brampton, with Angio several lengths away, over four furlongs run in 54 2-ssecs. Fast Passage and Concentrate 'were companions over seven furlongs. They ran the first three in 39 l-ssecs., four in 52 l-ssecs., and completed the full distance in 1,32 4-ssoes. Fast Passage, who was on the outside; and had the better of the weights, did her work well, while Concentrate went pleasingly. The Railway Handicap candidate The Quorn was running on strongly at the finish of half a mile, which occupied 51 2-ssees. This horse is a picture of condition, and should give a ggod account of himself at Ellerslie next Monday. Wee Pat was timed to run five furlongs in 1.5 2-5. Kilmuir jumped off in front of her at the halfmile post, and finished up his work ,in 52 2-ssees. Desert Star, after running his first throe furlongs in 42 2-ssecs., got to the end of six furlongs in 1.24 3- The best sprint of the morning was registered by Sunny Sky and Merry Damon, who were associated over five furlongs. They ran the first two in 24 2-ssecs., and finished up in 1.2 4-5. Sunny Sky, who had tho outside running, did her work very pleasingly, and Merry Damon was also responsible for a good effort. Sunny Sky. is carrying a bit of surplus condition. There was little between Lanoro and Tahae Mea after running the last half-mile of thpir work in 53 3-ssecs.

Sunny Bachelor worked alone over five furlongs, and completed his task in 1.6 2-5, the final three furlongs taking 39 4-ssecs. He went very evenly throughout. After breakfast Psychologist was timed to run a mile in 1.48 4-5. He covered the first half in 52 l-ssecs., and the final six furlongs in 1.23 3-5. Esealus jumped off at the six-furlong post, taking 38 4-&sees. for his first three furlongs, and running the full distance in 1.23 1-5. This horse has not been up very long, and is still big in condition.

On the Tan. The cup candidate Jaloux was sent about a mile and a quarter, his stablemate Azalea assisting him over tho last round, which occupied 1.51 3-5, the last seven furlongs taking 1.34 4-5. Jaloux did his work in good style, but Azalea did not appear to handle the track well. Red Sun was given steady pace work, and looks in good order for his forthcoming engagements. Supreme Ruler completed a round in 1.53 3-5, Ruling King assisting him over tho final seven furlongs, which occupied 1,35. Silver Scorn and Berate did pace work separately on this track, and they will probably bo galloped to-morrow. The jumpers Billy Boy and Absent traversed a round in 1.59 1-5, Hie former finishing several lengths in front of his companion. Marching . e., finished in front of Prince of Orange at tho conclusion of a round, which he traversed in 1.55 1-5, the last seven fur-

longs being covered in 1.38 1-5. Black Songster was allotted a useful task, running his last five furlongs in 1.7 4-5. Grand' Review worked once round at a steady pace, and her stablemate Great Star did useful work over a mile and a half, averaging about 16secs. to the furlong. The inside grass track, with the poles six feet out, and the plough, were in use at Takanini on Tuesday morning, and they were in excellent order. Greek Gold (Taylor) was half a length in front of Exaggeration (Gilmer) at the end of five furlongs in 1.1 4-5. Both horses went well, and Greek Gold appears to be showing all his former speed. Kind Words (Gomm) and Bugle Call (Grice) worked over a mile on the plough, running the distance comfortably in 1.50. Prolyxo (Moore) beat Holly Lu (Gilmer) by several lengths over seven furlongs, w’hich she traversed in 1.27 3-s—a track record for the distance. Tea Trader (Walters) worked over nine furlongs, but the pace was on only over the last three, which he ran comfortably in 38 4-ssec. Gold Pocket (Gilmer) was two lengths in advance of Expectancy (Fearn) at the end of half a mile in 52 2-ssec. The former was going away at the finish. Master Brierly (Moore) easily defeated Royal Artist (Reardon) over a mile run in the good time of 1.42 4-5. The first half took 50 2-ssec, which probably accounts for Royal Artist not finishing on so well. Alignment (McFarlane) ran home from the three-furlong post in 40sec without being unduly hurried. Great Emblem (Manson) was sent a mile on the plough with Marmorate (Fearn) and Orendo (Forsyth), the trio finishing in that order at intervals of a couple of lengths in 1.48. .Gay Marigold (Moore) improved on her mile effort of last week by defeating Chief Joy (Gilmer) very comfortably in 1.42. Gay Marigold commenced to leave her companion three furlongs from homo, and finished several lengths in front. Lorelie (Fearn) was two lengths in front of Gay Sheila (Reardon) at tho finish of half a mile in 50 3-ssec.

Pillow Fight’s appearance created interest, and he duly satisfied the track watchers by covering six furlongs on the plough in the best time that has been recorded on this track, namely, 1.14. He was ridden by E. S. Bagby, and was accompanied over the last half mile by Lord Willonyx (Forsyth), who finished on terms with him. The plough is usually a great deal slower than the grass, but they are both very fast at present, and there is not a great deal of difference between them. Pillow Fight has improved a good deal, and he should take some beating in his classic engagements at Ellerslie. Tavern Knight (Manson) was trotted over a couple of rounds. He showed signs of soreness, and unless he makes a rapid recovery may not take his place in the Great Northern Foal Stakes.
