CARNIVAL AT HAWERA. NEW BEACON SWITCHED ON. By Telegraph—Press Association Hawera, Dec. 19. The carnival spirit reigned in Hawera on Saturday. Several thousands thronged the street for open-air concerts and fancy-dress dancing, which continued from 9.30 in the evening till midnight, on the occasion of the switching-on ceremony of the Jubilee Beacon, which is installed on the neon light principle to Commemorate the borough’* jubilee of February last. The beacon is formed by a series of lights circling the top of the water tower 166 feet above the ground level and said to be New Zealand’s highest sky sign. It will show nightly from sunset to 2 a.m. and will be visible over a wide area. It has been charted by the Marine Department.
