ORDINATION SERVICE
ARCHBISHOP REDWOOD IN NAPIER
CEREMONY AT ST. PATRICK’S
An ordination service was held at St. Patrick’s Church. Napier, yesterday morning, when His Grace Archbishop Redwood, raised to the dignity of the priesthood the following:—Rev. Leo Spring, S.M.; Rev. Alexander Robinson. S.M.; Rev. Maurice Bourke S.M.; Rev. George Head. S.M.; and Rev. Leonard Brice, S.M. The following were raised to the order of sub-deacons, the Rev. George Cheeseman S.M.; Rev. Herbert Massey S.M.; and Rev. James Durning S.M. The church was crowded to the doors for the occasion. The Rev. Dr. Casey, S.M., was Master of Ceremonies, and Drs. Martin. S.M., and Geaney, S.M., assisted His Grace the Archbishop in the solemn and impressive services. Showing in voice and bearing little signs of his great age, the venerable prelate in his enunciation, deep, clear and unfaltering, gave to the service a dignity and reverence which could not fail to impress all who witnessed it.
At the conclusion of the ordination service, the newly ordained priests gave Solemn Benediction to their relatives, friends, and members of the church.
In the evening there was again a large congregation when the Rev. Father Bartley, S.M., M.A., of Timaru, preached a powerful and eloquent sermon on the dignity of the priesthood.
