OTANE SCHOOL

ANNUAL BREAK-UP. SUCCESSFUL YEAR ENDS. From Our Own Correspondent. Ideal weather favoured the Otane school prize-giving, which was held on Friday afternoon on the lawn. Seated with the staff were the chairman, Mr A. E. Black, the Rev. R. B. Waugh, Mrs Waugh and Mrs Black. In his remarks Mr Black welcomed the parents and congratulated the headmaster and staff on the proficiency results, and also the pupils of Standard (> on their excellent work. The headmaster, Mr Trevena, extended a very hearty welcome to everyone. and said it was pleasing to the staff to see such a large attendance of Otanfc people who were interested in the school. He wished to publicly thank the excellent staff for the work they had done to make such a successful year. The work in the various rooms had been very solid for the staff and the splendid support they had given had allowed him to give more attention to the senior class. Miss Lister, of Gisborne, had filled a temporary position and had given excellent service. He also wished to thank the committee for their splendid support in every way. The interest they had shown in beautifying the grounds reflected the greatest credit. He wished to congratulate all those who had passed their proficiency and hoped that in the future these pupils would continue to study hard and wished them the best of luck. In conclusion Mr Trevena stated that. Miss McGreevy would be leaving this term, and expressed his regret in losing such an efficient teacher. The Rev. R. Waugh, of Havelock North, then shortly addressed the children.

The presentation of prizes followed, Mrs A. E. Black presenting the dux medal to Billy Lee, which was aw '•ompanied by hearty cheers. Mr Waugh then presented certificates to the following:—Proficiency: Valda Fowls, Peggy Pilcher, Trixie Robottom, Dorothy Stafford, Ella Stafford,, Charlie Anderton, Terry Davies. Bertie Burchitt, Billy Lee, Norman Coley, Tom Coley, Peter Collett, Jack Graham, Ewen Hanna, Ralph Scrimgeour, Ronald Stafford, D. Steven. Competency. Hugh Fair, Jo Holley, Malcolm Cameron and Lucky ' Kau Kau. Swimming Certificate.—Trixie Robottom. Primer books were presented to Valerie Walker, Nellie Germain, Mary Hammond, Bernie Harbottle, Maurice Tod, Joe Gregg, Len Anderton, Douglas Accott, Denny August, Terence Cameron, Norrie Crawley, Willie Eru, Lawrence Fair, Tangi Hecke, Ira Beadte, Gwen Davies, Noel Lange Forbes Minto, Dan Nunn, Colin Pedersen, Colin Page, Ken Scheele, Willie Scheele Frank Smith, Colin Stafford, Ron Thomas, Joy Dell, Audrey Dell, Shirtey Crawley, Mary Fowlds, Iris Higgins, Barbara Harbottle, Miriam Hoskins, Claire Jones, Cherry Lee, Dawn Maugway, Coral Nunn, Joan Neilen, Doris Neilin, Ruth Price, Beryl Scrimgeour, Peggy Sharp and Betty Trevena.

Special prizes for good work were presented as follows Dot Stafford, Ella Stafford, Peggy Pilcher, Billy Lee, Trixie Robottom, Bertie Burchitt, Douglas Steven, Jack Graham, Ron Stafford, Peter Collett VaMa Fowlds, Lucky Kau Kau, Charley Audenton, Tom Coley, Norman Coley, Ewen Hanna and Ralph Scrimgeour. The awards for the highest positions in class were as follows:—

Primer 4.—Peggy Sharp 1, Miriam Hoskins 2, Dawn Mudgway. Standard I.—Una Thompson 1, Phil Oram 2, Bernie Nunn 3. Standard 2. —Ephra Nunn 1, Joan Oram 2, Laurence McKenzie 3.

Standard 3. —Betty McCartin 1, Roy Hercock 2, Lester Earnshaw 3. Standard 4. —Tessa Lee 1, Mavis Beadle 2, Mabel Douglas 3.

Standard s.—Audrey Tod 1, Elva Higgins 2. Connie Budge 3. Standard 6—William Lee 1, Dorothy Stafford 2, Jack Graham 3.

During the afternoon school songs were sung by the children and very much enjoyed.

Mr Black thanked Mr Waugh for coming so far to present the prizes and expressed his appreciation of the excellent address he had given, which had appealed to the old as well as the young. He was also very pleased to see Mr Mcßae, senr., back again and present at the break-up. Mr Mcßae was an old identity and father of a former headmaster.'

At the conclusion parents were invited to examine the school work in the various rooms and afternoon tea was dispensed. The singing of Auld Lang Syne and three hearty chbers for the staff concluded a most successful year’s work.
