Appeals to Umpires. The manner of appealing to umpires during cricket matches in Napier was the subject of criticism by Mr H. V. Phillips at the fortnightly meeting of the management committee of the Hawke’s Bay Cricket Association last evening. “I have noticed this season quite a number of loud appeals from a large number of fielders and I do not think it is right or necessary,” he said. Mr W. T. Foster expressed the view that such appeals were maae spontaneously on the part of players, Mr Phillips replying that he thought that the bowler and the wicket-keeper were the only players who need appeal. “I certainly object to a player fielding on the blind side appealing for an l.b.w. decision,” he said.
