SUPREME COURT

NAPIER QUARTERLY SESSION. TO-DAY’S PROCEEDINGS. A sentence Of 15 mouths’ Imprisonment with hard labour was imposed upon Thomas Alexander McNeil, of Hastings, who was found guilty of a serious offence in the Supreme Court at Napier this morning, before His Honour Mr, Justice MacGregor. The jury returned a verdict after an absence of 37 minutes. On behalf of the prisoner, Mr. E. J. W, Hallett asked for leniency, stating that up to the present time nothing was known against the accused. His father and mother were well respected citizens of the Weber district. The first civil claim to be commenced was an action brought by Clara Jane Smyth (Messrs J. Humphries and H. B. Lusk) against Arthur John Haslam (Mr. E. J. w, Hallett), claiming £4OOO damages by way of compensation and £33 11/9 special damages, arising out of the loss of her busband in a motor accident. The following jury was empanelled: Messrs R. Biekerstaff (foreman), E, Amner, J, Rockell, A, E. Signail, R. J. Arthur, H. S. Spiller, H. Nalder, J. A. M. Stevens, W. Brown, A. S. Dunnage, C. W. Knight, and H. Dawson. The case for the plaintiffs was proceeding when we went to press. "
