ALLEGED PERJURY
CONTRACTOR ON TRIAL. ACCUSED FOUND GUILTY. Auckland, Oct. 31. The- hearing of the charge against Ernest Cheadle, aged 30, a carrier and contractor, who is standing his trial on charge of perjury, was continued this afternoon. It is alleged that accused gave evidence in a Supreme Court case in which damages were claimed for negligence and that he said he saw the accident which led to claim, whereas he was not in the vicinity and did not see the accident. . Witnesses who were on the scene of the accident said that they did not see the accused there. Further evidence was produced to show that on the afternoon of the accident the accused was in the city and not near the scene of the accident. A detective said that the accused, when arrested, pointed out three different places as the site of the accident, his final choice being ten yards away from the actual spot. Counsel for the accused claimed that it was a case of the insurance company trying to avoid its responsibilities. The jury returned a verdict of guilty and the accused was' remanded for sentence.
